Questions

Does social media marketing work?

Social media marketing can be highly effective for crafters, but success depends on understanding your audience and choosing the right platforms for your specific craft niche.

Visual platforms like Instagram and Pinterest work exceptionally well for showcasing finished pieces and behind-the-scenes creation processes, while TikTok has proven valuable for demonstrating quick techniques or revealing dramatic before-and-after transformations.

The key lies in consistency and authentic engagement rather than just posting product photos.

Crafters who share their creative process, offer tips and tutorials, and genuinely connect with their community often see significant growth in both followers and sales.

However, social media marketing requires substantial time investment and patience, as building a meaningful audience rarely happens overnight.

Many successful crafters use social media not just for direct sales, but as a way to drive traffic to their websites, email lists, or other platforms where they can build deeper relationships with customers.

While algorithms and platform changes can be frustrating, crafters who treat social media as a long-term relationship-building tool rather than a quick sales fix typically see the best results.

Which social media platforms to use?

The choice of social media platforms should align with your craft type and target audience, but Instagram and Pinterest consistently perform best for most crafters due to their visual-first nature.

Pinterest functions almost like a search engine for DIY projects and craft inspiration, making it invaluable for driving long-term traffic to your website or blog, while Instagram excels at building community and showcasing your creative process through posts, stories, and reels.

TikTok has become increasingly important for crafters, especially those who can demonstrate techniques or transformations in short, engaging videos that appeal to younger audiences.

Facebook remains valuable for building local community connections and craft show promotion, while Facebook groups offer opportunities to share expertise and connect with fellow crafters.

YouTube deserves serious consideration if you enjoy creating detailed tutorials, as it serves dual purposes of education and income generation through ad revenue and affiliate marketing. Rather than trying to maintain a presence everywhere, most successful crafters focus on mastering two or three platforms that best showcase their work and reach their ideal customers.

Consider starting with Instagram for community building and Pinterest for discoverability, then expanding to other platforms once you’ve established a consistent content creation routine.

What are my top social media marketing methods?

My current social media marketing approach centers around creating 20-second videos with AI assistance.

I start by using AI tools to generate both banner-style images and content-specific visuals that relate to whatever post or page I’m promoting.

Next, I have AI create targeted ad copy focused on specific keywords, formatted as 10 or 20-second text prompts that work well for short-form video content.

From there, I take everything into Canva to assemble the final video.

I add text overlays and either include a voice-over or simply use background music, depending on what feels right for each piece of content.

Once the videos are complete, I distribute them across multiple platforms using a combination of automation and manual posting.

I have software that handles posting to Facebook groups and Instagram automatically, but I still upload to TikTok manually since it requires more platform-specific attention.

While I currently focus mainly on these short videos, I did spend six months doing intensive Pinterest marketing in the past, posting over 100 images daily.

I still maintain a presence there, but now I only share a few videos each day rather than the massive volume I once managed.

The real strategy lies in researching what your audience wants to learn about, or in most crafters’ cases, what they’re actively looking to purchase.

Once I identify these topics, I create comprehensive blog posts on my website, then develop multiple videos promoting that specific content. Consistency over the long term is what makes this approach effective.

FAQ

Is it possible to just do craft markets and still make a good living?

Yes. Definitely, but I suggest that you also focus on the online sales to give you a stronger financial footing.

If you plan to run craft markets full-time, you will need to book the best shows, have larger booth setups, and display your products with a well-stocked display, while still maintaining a professional appearance, rather than that of a church fete.

How much of a difference does my display make to my sales ?

How you display your items makes a massive difference to your sales. Firstly, you need a LOT of stock. Then you need your displays to go to at least eye level. Your gazebo (if your booth has one) should stand out from all the others. There are other things, but those first 2 make the biggest difference.

Does my craft product choice or niche make a big difference to my sales.?

Huge. I know that extensive product and niche research could potentially increase sales by as much as 100 times if you transition from a mediocre product to a popular one.

Can I mix products on my booth ?

No. If you mix products (like splitting your booth or table into two distinctly different products), you will probably reduce your sales to even less than half of what they could have been.

Now, there is nothing wrong with having a wide mix of items that are all of the same niche. For example, large wall art selling at hundreds of dollars and at the same time, small letter-sized wall art selling at $30. I even had some wall art pieces priced at $10 when I was selling on the markets.
